Well that's what happens when you buy a Toshiba. My first laptop was Tosh - superb. And the second, third.
My 4th was a Toshiba which just upped and died 13 months into a 12 month warranty.
My 5th was an HP, but for some incredible reason I also bought a Tecra which was like some stoneage P.O.S. which also died after 14 months.
Toshiba were one of the leaders of the laptop revolution - but they've really dropped the ball now. I currently use to HPs a TC4400 Tablet and a Compaq 6710B.
I wouldn't mind so much if the Tosh's were cheaper.
My 2 HPs have both successfully installed, Centos 4, Centos 5, OpenSuse 10.2/10.3, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and Ubunto 8.something.
Never, ever, ever buy a Toshiba craptop.

One solution that has worked for me using the alternate install Ubuntu CD when installs have failed (both on Dells)
is to pre-parttion using a light distribution live CD containing GParted such as Puppy or Pmagic. Using Gparted,
I deleted all partitions (was doing a single install, not
a dual boot) and re-created the partitions from scratch (and
formatted the filesystems.) Gparted is the one used on the
Ubuntu live CD, but not the alternate (I think the alternate
uses partman or something.) This worked for me and I thought it might help though it looks like you might be done with Ubuntu for now.
