While it is a kernel most people refer to the operating system as a whole when talking about Linux. I mean by default if they are going to be using a Linux kernel, they're more than likely going to be using the Linux Desktop. Same with Windows, BSD or the Darwin kernel. Open source alternatives are not the same. Open Office has come a long way, but it is a good example. Most of what I do could be replaced with Linux, however there are a few programs that cannot equally be replaced with a linux app (at this time) that I use. I could replace my CGI modelling/animation software with Blender, however I've just figured out how to use my current software, learning a new one for this does not bode well for my schedule. Don't get me wrong, I love linux and will be moved over to it mostly. I will still keep XP either as a dual boot or running in VMWare. I do believe most people could successfully convert to linux and not miss anything. This project is a great idea.
