@william - this was also posted in 2008. You're right, its not a Linux specific computer, but neither is the Air. You can however refuse your Windows license and get the cost of Windows back. I have never heard of anyone doing that with Apple though.

I own a Portege R500 running openSuse 10.3. Actually, you can get 8 hours in Windows (XP, Wifi off, reading documents, 8.1 Watts power consumption!). In openSuse it needs 12.5 Watts, Wifi turned on 13.5 Watts, which give me a runtime between 4 and 5.5 hours (all, but one powertop tricks applied, USB_SUSPEND is not support by the suse kernel.). I'm wondering, where the 4.5 Watt gap to Windows is coming from??

In general, this is a true linux machine, i.e. almost all is running (except the sd-card reader, which should be fixed in the newest kernel and the transflexive display feature).

Read on my blog:
http://loblog.wordpress.com/2008/02/12/linux-on-the-toshiba-portege-r500-updates/

There are more "undocumented" nice features, for example you can charge the machine via USB (draining my iAudio X5 in USB host mode, hehe...)!
