I also install rkhunter. I don’t run it in a cron but like to have it create an initial log of the server status in case a security issue comes up.

Personally, I install the following packages after booting my laptop on a fresh Linux:
- Support for mp3, mpeg2, etc …
- Support for dvd (libdvdcss)
- vlc
- skype
- ffmpeg
- audacity
- gimp
- wireshark (yes, I do a bit of networking too)
- and for firefox, I configure sync to get my bookmarks etc back from the cloud.
- also for firefox, I get the flash plug-in, and “ad block plus” anti-advertising
