@NOSPAM I have too read the book. Do you know how hard it is to write and keep a technical book up to date? I thought they did a good job. The Free update is to the new version when it comes out. Perhaps you could enlighten us more.

See my comment on amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Ubuntu-Unleashed-2010-Covering-9-10/dp/0672331098

after reading the negative comments on this page, I have first download a .pdf version of this book, to take a good look at it.
this book is a lie.
this is an old edition with a fallacious title (8.04 LTS with some new print screens and some updates here and there) but the underline doc is for 8.04:
a full chapter on the deprecated and xorg.conf (not present in 9.10); nothing about any of the changes in 9.10 as the new GDM (see: [...]) or GRUB2 (already mentioned in another comment); Print screens of the 8.04 LTS version (but for ONE single 9.10 GNOME desktop print screen); the list is long.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!
The book content itself is good though (what what it worth), but the publisher should be stoned to death for his lie. Imagine I sell you an old Amiga with an flashing new sticker "Updated for playing 1920 HD movie", that's what this book is all about: a big fat lie.

Probably none of you have read it, reading at the comments.

@CHUCK I was a Fedora guy for the past 1.5 years, this is the first time I've really seriously tried Ubuntu other than complaining about other peoples computers. The terminal chapter should be left in the book, its not that hard to pick up if you need to use it and as stated it is likely at some point, it will be needed.

I'm more of a Fedora guy, but I really like the way the Ubuntu community makes it so easy to adopt Linux.

I agree with you about the command line -- keep it. Giving up the power of the command line to accommodate a few total idiots makes no sense.

Thanks for the nice review.

@YOURMASTER While I sort of agree, with you the "Free" part is a copy of the 10.04 DVD and an upgrade kit that is mailed to you free of charge. Meaning you kind of do get your second breath sans cost.

[...] Ubuntu Unleashed 2010 Edition Review Irritated with my Desktop after an upgrade gone bad and an incident with the nvidia noveau driver that left me x less, I decided it was time to re-install. I turned to my bookshelf to find Ubuntu Unleashed 2010 Edition. Normally by the time a book hits my shelf the material is outdated, not necessarily useless, just not the most up to date. This is an exception. The Ubuntu Unleashed 2010 Edition was updated with an Ubuntu 9.10 DVD and a “Free Upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04″ which I found out that if you buy the book before the end of 2010 you can get an upgrade kit in the mail.
